A Fox Box is a numeracy resource to use with parents, grandparents,
guardians and/or carers (in future referred to as "parents")
to overcome the fear, apprehension and failure associated with
mathematics. The aim is to demonstrate to "parents"
that practical methods of working with mathematics can be enjoyable
and none threatening and at the same time break the cycle of
underachievement, fear and failure in mathematics.
The two designers and authors of the Fox Box concept, Janet
Tarn and Susan Fox, have many years experience in primary education
both as head teachers and practitioners. They also have experience
in working with adults in the "Skills
for Life" programme and as a mathematics lecturer at St.
Martin's College, Education Department, Lancaster, training
teachers and teaching assistants in the teaching of numeracy.
The designers and authors of the Fox Box have identified
a lack of an holistic approach to numeracy and mathematics and
have devised a practical method of introducing skills and concepts
in mathematics to parents and children.
